Baboon (Buddy) Update

by Erika on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 4:39pm

I am so impressed with Stray Rescue.  They fit me in today and based on what I saw while I was there, they had a full house.  My appointment was at 2, I arrived early and they saw Buddy and I immediately.

I shared with the vet everything I already shared with you and she began checking her notes and taking tests right away.  His blood work is good, but the poop test revealed Parvo.  According to PetMD...
The canine parvovirus (CPV) infection is a highly contagious viral illness that affects dogs. The virus manifests itself in two different forms. The more common form is the intestinal form, which is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and lack of appetite (anorexia). The less common form is the cardiac form, which attacks the heart muscles of very young puppies, often leading to death. The majority of cases are seen in puppies that are between six weeks and six months old. The incidence of canine parvovirus infections has been reduced radically by early vaccination in young puppies.
The vet and technicians at Stray Rescue are more postive.  They kept me from crying and told me that his chances are good.  I drove him to Veterinary Speciality Services (VSS) so he could be treated through the weeked.  The vet at VSS was also hopeful.

Buddy is on fluids and has already begun treatment.  I can call to check on him tonight and visit him throughout his stay.  He may return to Stray Rescue vet on Monday (to save costs), but we don't know yet.  I will transport him anywhere he needs to go to get the best care.

Stray Rescue is picking up the costs of Buddy's veterinary care, but treating parvo (especially over the weekend at emergency care) is expensive.  I have asked VSS for an estimate of their charges so that I can make an appopriate donation to Stray Rescue.  Please consider making a donation as well.  If you are unable to donate, please spread the word of their good work and consider adoption in your future.
